Size Does NOT Equal Self-Respect
I came across this article on the Huffington Post today. It’s an interview with Iman’s daughter (Iman is a supermodel… I vaguely knew that) , who battled obesity before getting gastric bypass surgery. The amazing thing about this interview is that she states very clearly that she was happy even when she was obese and her decision to get the surgery was solely based on her health declining, and her unsuccessful attempts to lose weight (although she says that she did try the typical diets, not anything she could keep up for very long). I think this is such a different message than what we are used to hearing in the media, which is LOTS of associations between weight and happiness. That’s right, ladies, being skinny WILL NOT make you happy. She was always happy and loved and respected herself. Those things had nothing to do with her weight. I think a lot of women need to rethink why they may be unhappy or unsatisfied in their lives, two feelings that for women often get caught up in what we weigh, what we look like, and how fit we are.
On a side note: I can’t take Kathie Lee and Hoda seriously – I always think of the SNL spoof of their show now….
I also came across this article, also on the HuffPo, about Brittney Spears releasing un-altered photos of herself at a recent photo shoot alongside the edited ones. I don’t have really have an opinion of Britney, I never really got into her music or anything, but she is a HUGE pop icon, obviously, and I think this is an amazing thing for her to do. It shows that she has some intelligence and is aware of how her portrayal in the media may be harmful to women, especially young women. I am impressed.
I’m not feeling so hot tonight, so I’m heading to bed soon. But I thought I would post some of what I ate today, since I went through the trouble of actually taking the pictures!
Banana-blackberry oat bran for breakfast:

I made Tom an identical bowl. He is HOOKED on banana-chia oat bran!
Leftover bulgur salad with spinach for lunch:

Plus an apple
And a tomato and avocado sandwich with a Laughing Cow cheese and mustard for dinner:

I made an extra sandwich for lunch tomorrow, but then realized I don’t know how well it will keep overnight… I hope the avocado doesn’t get all brown! The bread might get soggy too… I guess I’ll find out
I used 1/4 of an avocado on each sandwich, and the other half is in the fridge. Avocados are hard to keep after you’ve cut into them!
I also snacked on some raisins, almonds, and carob chips this afternoon, and had a Chobani for dessert
I decided I needed to make a batch of Carob Almond Granola before I ate all the carob chips on their own!

I’m in love with this recipe and I’m gonna make it until I get sick of it! Which I can’t foresee happening.
I purchased my cap and gown today! It’s made from 100% recyclable material. I would expect no less from my school. I mean, it’s powered by methane from a landfill, after all.
G’night.
